What Are Soup Kitchens?

Soup kitchens are still helping those in need of comfort and a hot meal. Search for food banks, food pantries and soup kitchens in the United States.

What are Soup Kitchens?

A soup kitchen is basically a non-profit business that serves free meals to the needy. During the Great Depression, there were many soup kitchens that served free soup and bread to the hungry and since then, soup kitchens have been found throughout the United States. Today, soup kitchens serve more substantial meals that are well balanced, as well as very nutritious. Some soup kitchens serve just one meal a day, while others serve more meals and snacks. Some are just open one day a week and others every day. Most people in need of a meal will be served without having to show any type of identification.

History Of Soup Kitchens

Soup kitchens date back to many centuries ago when churches started feeding the poor and starving. Many religious organizations still run their own soup kitchens for those who are hungry in their community. Many churches also have a food pantry, where those in need, can select food for their family. Usually, some form of identification is needed to have access to the food pantry and access is generally limited.

Organizations That Run Soup Kitchens

But not all soup kitchens are run by religious institutions. Many charities that are not affiliated with a church, operate soup kitchens for the homeless and needy in their areas. Most of the work done at a soup kitchen is done by volunteers. And this includes preparation, serving and cleanup. Most of the food that is used by soup kitchens is donated by food banks, grocery stores, corporations and individuals. If it wasn't for the volunteer work and donations, many soup kitchens would not be able to operate at all.

Other Services Offered By Soup Kitchens

Many soup kitchens offer other services too, such as health care or shelter. Some of them have referral services for health care, dental services and for homeless shelters. Sometimes social workers will be there to offer help. But most of all, a hot meal and a friendly smile will be offered to all that seek food and comfortable place to eat.

As you can see, soup kitchens play an important part in our communities for helping to feed the hungry. Fellowship, clothing and social services are also provided for individuals and families. If you have the time and interest, think about donating food, clothing and your hard work, at a soup kitchen in your community, it will certainly be appreciated.
